Informal learning in European SMEs:Approaches and Drawbacks

This activity will be used to get a grasp on informal learning (including mentoring) in SMEs and how it is used it will provide an in depth examination of these practices in partner countries through surveys focus groups discussions and case studies. The main objectives are
- Identify current informal learning approaches in SMEs
- Identify benefits and problems with these approaches
- How is ICT used to support these
- Outline an ideal scenario for informal learning in SMEs

The main activities are
-Workpackage methodology
-Survey on informal learning with 50 SMEs in each partner country
-Focus group discussions on informal/social learning with 10 SMEs in each country
-Case studies with 1 SME in each country to give an indepth explanation of how informal learning takes place and how it occurs within the organisation and aspects it addresses
- Report and recommendations for the project

Best practices in Problem based learning

This activity will examine the types of problems in SMEs and how these problems are addressed internally within SMEs. It will look at models of PBL and how these align to the SMEs requirements and can be exploited to encourage learning in SMEs.

The main objectives are
- A review of the literature of PBL models
- A review of current and previous projects on PBL
- A study of how problems are identified and addressed in SMEs and how they are successful and if any learning occurs
- Outline a successful scenario for Problem identification and solving in SMEs
- Report on PBL and recommendations of how the above can be applied to PBL

Activities will include
- Develop a workpackage methodology
- Literature search
- Identification of relevant projects
- Interviewing project co-ordinators
- Reviewing project documentation
- Survey of 50 SMEs in each country
- Focus groups with 10 SMEs in each partner country
- Case study of 1 SME in each country to get an indepth understanding of how PBL could benefit an SME

The use of ICT in supporting informal learning and PBL in SMEs

This activity will examine how ICT is used to support informal learning in SMEs and projects concerning the development of IT to support informal learning and PBL

Objectives are:
-Review past projects concerned with the use of ICT to support informal learning
-Review past projects concerned with the use of ICT to support PBL
- Identify what tools are used in SMEs for informal learning and collaboration
- Identify are they successful and why/why not
- Explore and evaluate the emerging tools that could be used to support informal learning and PBL in SMEs
- Recommend a suite of tools for the ICT platform
- Produce a requirements specification for the ICT platform

Activities will include:
- Development of a work package methodology
-Review of literature
- Identification of relevant projects
- Conduct a survey with 50 SMEs in each country, Focus groups with 10 SMEs in each country.
-Search and review relevant ICT tools
- Produce a report on ICT tools for informal learning
-Produce a requirements specification for the IT platform
